Daniel Norell: In Conversation

Daniel Norell is an architect, researcher and educator based in Stockholm. Together with Einar Rodhe Norell is co-founder of the collaborative architecture practice Norell/Rodhe. The work of Norell/Rodhe ranges from competition winning schemes for cultural buildings and landscapes, to interiors and installations. The practice frequently participates in publications and exhibitions and their work has recently been shown at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, ArkDes - Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design, Syracuse University, Form/Design Center, and at Aalto University.

In his lecture Daniel will discuss how architecture might communicate through development of form and materiality. In the work of Norell/Rodhe, this often happens through couplings of abstract architectural traits, such as proportion and frontality, with a gritty world of untamed materials and found objects. Particular use of figures, textures and colours open up alternative approaches to architectural communication that rely on faint resemblances and multiple states of attention. Neither silent, nor stunning, this kind of architecture enters into conversations with the city and its inhabitants.

Daniel is Director of the Master’s Programme in Architecture and Urban Design at Chalmers University in Gothenburg and has previously taught at the KTH School of Architecture in Stockholm, where he was a research fellow in architectural technology 2013-2016. He holds master’s degrees in architecture from University of California Los Angeles and the KTH.
