LOW TEXT - 6. Footnotes

November 27, 2019 at 7pm

The word “footnotes” invokes a suspicion that all text – despite the arbitrary nature of the sign, its artificial texture – remains a body, a body standing on a couple of feet. Located at the bottom, footnotes give this body hold. In a way, these “lower” situated voices document exchanges that have been continuously held in the evolution of the work.
Such hierarchy produced along the way reveals the power dynamics between what is put to the front and belongs to the main narrative and what is cast aside to the margins.

Taking inspiration from a literary text, we invite artists, thinkers, poets, and musicians to contemplate the role of a comment, reference, footnote in the broadest sense.
This session aims to provide a playful arena for a series of acrobatic exercises that invert foot vs. head hierarchies: an eccentric upheaval of the base that shapes the superstructure, of the queer, suppressed limbs of thought!

The cycle LOW TEXT aims to explore text production as a social practice and texts that surround us, invisible in their ubiquity. These “exhausting” types of texts - work emails, application, manuals, automated texts, while being a device of initiating and relating, became today an appendage of a bureaucratic machine that frames, silences and flattens the diversity.

LOW TEXT seeks to provide a space for a conversation rather than a celebration of an individual ego. In a sense, this cycle seeks to take a step back from individual authorship by choosing the texts of every day as a point of departure. But this stepping back is at once a step towards it. How can we engage critically with normative texts and claim them back?
