1. Who teaches at the Städelschule and what subjects do they offer?
- Potential students apply to join an individual professor’s class. Currently the professors are: Prof. Judith Hopf (fine arts), Prof. Michael Krebber (painting), Prof. Douglas Gordon (film), Prof. Christa Näher (painting), Prof. Tobias Rehberger (sculpture), Prof. Willem de Rooij (fine arts) and Prof. Simon Starling (fine arts).
- Each professor’s class is made up of students in various semesters. It is possible to change classes with the permission of both the current and future professor.

2. Can I contact a professor directly?
- If you would like to speak with a professor, you can make an appointment for a portfolio consultation. Here you will have the opportunity to present your work to the professor with whom you would like to work and ask any questions you might have. The Städelschule treats the contact information of professors and students as confidential so we do not pass them on to third parties.
3. What is the difference between portfolio consultation and course guidance?
- A professor of the Städelschule conducts a portfolio consultation. Here potential students have the opportunity to present their work and receive qualified feedback. Appointments are made at the beginning of each semester and you can register with the registrar’s office by telephone or by email.
- The registrar’s office offers course guidance during its office hours. Here you will find answers to your questions about applications and studies, as well as informational materials.
4. What is the deadline for applications?
- We accept new full-time students only for the winter semester and the registrar’s office must receive your application materials by June 15th of the previous summer. Our address is Städelschule, Registrar’s Office, Dürerstrasse 10, 60596 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
- We start accepting applications on May 1st and you can bring them to us in person or send them by mail.
5. When is the admission exam? What does it consist of?
- We accept new full-time students only for the winter semester. Portfolio reviews begin after the application deadline of June 15th. If you are accepted for the next step, you will receive an invitation to the admission exam, which is always at the beginning of July. This 2-day test consists of practical assignments and an interview.
6. What are the requirements for study at the Städelschule?
- Students must be artistically talented and at least 18 years of age when they begin their studies. A committee admits students based on the admission exam.
7. Is a language evaluation required to apply to the Städelschule?
- English and German are the languages of the school’s courses. A language test is not required, however good English and/or German skills will help you get the most out of our program.
8. Some students study at the Städelschule as guest students, others are matriculated into the academy’s program. What is the difference?
- The usual program for matriculated students at the Städelschule is 10 semesters. The program requires matriculated students to complete course credits.
- Admission as a guest student is valid for one semester and limited to three semesters. We cannot guarantee guest students a studio place at the Städelschule. Guest students have no course requirements but can attend all courses, seminars and school events. Guest students may apply to matriculate in the Städelschule program.
9. What are the tuition and other fees?
- Matriculated students pay no tuition. Fees for matriculated students are: one-time registration fee: € 50, accident insurance: € 1.50 per semester, transportation ticket: € 170.00 per semester.
- Fees for guest students are: tuition: € 110 per semester, accident insurance: € 1.50 per semester.
10. What financial aid is available?
- Many students finance their studies with one or more of the following: BAföG (German state financial aid), DAAD and other scholarships and stipends, student loans, jobs, children or family benefits. More information is available from the individual sources. The Städelschule itself does not offer financial aid.
11. Is the status “Meisterschüler” the same as a master’s degree?
- The Städelschule does not currently offer a master’s program in fine arts and the title “Meisterschüler” is not a master’s degree. At the end of the program, matriculated students receive certification that they have completed studies at the Städelschule.
12. Can previously earned course credits be applied to the Städelschule program?
- Students who have earned course credits or graduated from another college or university can apply credits to the Städelschule program which are related to studies here.
13. How do I find a place to live during my studies at the Städelschule?
- There are many options for living in Frankfurt am Main, it is however advisable to start your search with time to spare before you move here. Monthly rents for an apartment or a room in a shared flat vary between about € 240 and € 420 per month depending on the area.
