ON-SITE: PUBLICATION AS PRACTICE

Zak Kyes is a Swiss-American graphic designer based in London whose practise encompasses editing, publishing and curating. His work engages with publications and their dissemination as sites for debate and exchange rather than documentation. Kyes joined the Architectural Association as Art Director in September 2006. He curated the touring exhibition “Forms of Inquiry: The Architecture of Critical Graphic Design” and is the co-editor the accompanying catalogue (with Mark Owens, 2007) as well as The Reader: Iaspis Forum on Design and Critical Practice (Iaspis/Sternberg Press, 2009) and is the editor of Exhibition Prosthetics(Bedford Press/Sternberg Press, 2010). In 2008 he co-founded Bedford Press, a private press and imprint of AA Publications. As an artist in residence at the ICA, London, Kyes conceived COSEY COMPLEX Reader (ICA, 2010) in collaboration with Bedford Press. He currently teaches at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London and in the MA programme at ECAL/University of Art and Design, Lausanne.
