Post-Graduate Master Programme

Structure

The content of SAC's post-graduate Master program is structured in a progressive manner through which the first year design model becomes the basis for the second year design thesis. The specific work and content of the program are organized around three main principles. These principles work in synergy to make the programm highly contemporary in its endeavor to explore architecture in academic and professional terms related to the ongoing international discourse.

The principles of the programme are:

Architectural Design Programme

The program is formulated as an architectural design program. It seeks to explore architecture in terms of design in the fullest possible manner. This makes the program distinct from the few other, comparable post-graduate programs where students address and select more limited topics. The program is formulated in the belief that architectural design intelligence entails a holistic approach to architectural problems and that this intelligence is a unique type of intelligence that continues to have an acute relevance and a high potential in addressing current social, cultural, technical and economical topics in our society.

Research Programme

The program is formulated as a research program. This means that it engages with pre-defined sub-topics within an overall architectural paradigm. Research topics are defined for longer periods based on current themes in architecture and urbanism and in relation to relevant technological issues.

Architectural Project Theme

Each year the architectural design and research programs are formulated in relation to a precisely defined architectural brief. This brief serves to contextualise the architectural problems, which each student respectively addresses, in relation to the current status in the profession and academia as much as social and cultural parameters. The brief may be carried out with clients and/or professional consultants to meet with the exacting standards of the profession and applied research. Further to this, the program is structured around a set of core requirements that cover a variety of topical issues in architecture. The different requirements lead to the main design project, which completes the two-year training.

Modules

The teaching is organised in modules to supply each student with the input needed to complete the different requirements. Each module is structured around a specific overall theme and includes lectures, seminars, workshop and/or assignments.

The program consists of 3 types of modules:

PROGRAM MODULES are core modules relating to the architectural theme and research topics of the year. These modules define the basic structure of the program and are the largest of the three types of modules.

REGULAR MODULES comprise contemporary architectural history and theory; they are secondary to the program modules and support these.

FLOATING MODULES include technical training in various architectural skills. These modules are termed floating since they also support the program modules and their placement in the program is adapted to the progress of the program in general.
