During the academic year 2006-7, the Städelschule Architecture Class has participated in the competition, ‘Quo vadis Kultur Rhein-Main?’ – organised by the Frankfurt Kultur Komitee. The basic question posed in the competition brief is: What is the status and future of culture in the Rhein-Main region.

The Architecture Class has engaged with this problem in a three-fold manner. First, it has analysed select cultural forms and expressions in the region and attempted to understand some of the underlying dynamics and nature of culture as a phenomenon and fact. Second, it has engaged with the question of museums at large, seeing these as central carriers and mediators of cultural value. And, third, the students of the Diploma Group in the Architecture Class have used the two aforementioned investigations as basis for individual design thesis proposals. The latter comprises a series of museum proposals in different parts of the region. The proposals are part of the Architecture Class’ overarching strategic proposition to use a regional politics of museums to boost and develop culture in Rhein-Main region.
