The Art Hostel -A New Building for Instituto Cultural Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil
Flowing Intensities of Interiority and Exteriority
The site chosen for the Art Hostel is located at the interface between the Inhotim grounds and the village called Cohab and should negotiate the boundary between the museum and the community.
The intention was the activation of the interface between Inhotim and Cohab. Therefore a design strategy was chosen, in which the Art Hostel should act as an attraction point that attracts flows from the village and potential future developments such as a planned school and memorial centre in direct vicinity of the site.
Intensive research and analysis about different flow conditions in magnetic fields but also the extensive research undertaken in first year about the bundling phenomenon were used for the programmatic deployment on site. Based on this a system of “sectional-flow-deflectors” was utilised to generate different spatial conditions that supports the Idea of the Hostel being a place, that simultaneously combines the notion of Interiority and Exteriority.
