Flow Ecologies
The role of the skyscraper has always been to increase density in
urban areas. But in population-declining Germany, the justification of
high-rise living must offer more than an increased ratio of number of
inhabitants to ground area. The project, "High-rise Hybrids: Flow
Ecologies" offers different forms of intensification on a
programmatic, organizational and structural level on different scales
and in many overlapping environments. "Flow Ecologies" presents the
living space as integral to its immediate natural surroundings, the
city it is plugged into and the multitude of virtual
network-crossings, originating and
terminating in the site.
By analyzing flows on many levels in our contemporary lifestyle, a
complex matrix of flowcharts is generated. The flowcharts underlie the
logic of the design. With subtle gradients from public through
semi-private to private space and with abrupt shifts of functional
layers and zones, the project engenders mass-personalized living
nodes. The high-rise is turned into a living hub that is in constant
flux of people, goods, information, native flora and fauna.
